Save on Energy: Good for Your Wallet and Good for the Environment
One area that many people spend thousands of dollars on each year is energy usage. In order to run lights, heat up water, wash and dry clothes, and run a dishwasher we must use a lot of energy. Not only does excess energy usage cost a lot of money, but it's taxing on the environment's natural resources. Certain product manufacturers have begun to offer energy-saving products and energy companies are now offering incentives for consumers to purchase energy-saving appliances.
As more people reduce their energy consumption, the environment will benefit. Most forms of energy require some type of fuel in order to generate electricity or heat. These fuels give off gases and are starting to become scarce in certain areas. Finding alternative forms of energy and reducing overall energy usage will help insure that the natural resources needed are still around in the future.
Ways to Save Energy
One of the easiest ways to save energy is to reset your water heater to a lower temperature. It takes a lot of energy to heat water to a high temperature. If you set your water heater to around 110-120 degrees, you still get the sanitizing temperatures you need for cleaning but reduce the amount of energy needed for heating. Use cold water to wash most loads of laundry, except those with strong stains or odors. Warm water works for cleaning most dishes, and those with stuck on food can be soaked with a small amount of hot water.
When doing loads of laundry, wait until you have a nice day to do towels and linens. These take longer to dry than clothing, so save on energy and energy costs by handing towels, blankets, and sheets out to dry on a clothes line. Not only will you save energy, your linens and towels will get that fresh air-dried smell not possible from a drier.
Use CFL light bulbs in place of traditional bulbs. These bulbs use less energy and last longer than traditional bulbs. You will see a reduction in your energy bill by replacing your current bulbs with CFL bulbs. Keep your air conditioning and heat on a reasonable temperature. Run fans in the summer and layer clothes in the winter to avoid cranking the heat or air too high.
How You Will Save Money
Speak with your electric company to find out if they offer any rebates for purchasing energy-efficient appliances. Some will take the amount right off of your next electric bill or send you a check for the rebate amount. By keeping your air and heat at a steady temperature, you will see a reduction in your electric bill. Most people see a steep rise in their electric bill during the winter and summer months because they don't take steps to cool down or heat up their home that don't include cranking the air or heat. You can also make sure your house is properly insulated so that heat and cold don't escape. Once you start taking steps to reduce your energy usage, the financial savings will follow.
