Insurance: You Need It, but How to Keep It Low-Budget?
The three main types of insurances that everyone needs include home insurance, car insurance, and health insurance. Without these, you can end up spending thousands due to an emergency and it's even illegal to drive without insurance in most places. Since insurance companies know they have a product that sells, it's not always easy to find cheap insurance that provides all of the coverage you need. There are a few things that anyone can do to lower the monthly premium without sacrificing needed coverage.
Go Insurance Shopping
Call around to your local insurance agencies and see what the best rate is for your local area. After that, go on insurance comparison sites and find out how those rates compare to your local rates. You may find cheaper rates locally because smaller insurance companies will often offer discounts if you choose to roll all of your insurances into their company. For example, you may get a percentage decrease in your home insurance if you also buy your auto and life insurance through the company. But if you already have an insurance carrier for your auto or home that you like, you may find a better deal for one type of insurance by using a comparison shopping website.
Look for Small Ways to Save
To stay within your budget for insurance, look for easy ways to save. Start by seeing if you need all of the coverage offered on the insurance. Everyone should have liability insurance on their vehicle, but if you're driving around a car that doesn't have much value left to it you may not need comprehensive coverage which pays for damages to your vehicle. If you'd pay out more for insurance on a car that's only worth a thousand dollars, you can skip this type of coverage.
If you have good health insurance, you can probably opt out of personal injury protection also. Double check your homeowners insurance for coverage you don't need. If you're paying for flood insurance when you live in a desert region, ask why it's included and how much you'll save if you remove it.
Keep your deductibles high if you need to save on your monthly premiums. The more you're willing to pay out of pocket on a deductible, the less the insurance company will charge you per month. While this can save you money in the long run, make sure you have a savings account with an amount in it that's at least close to the deductible should you have an emergency.
Let your insurance company know if you've made any changes or improvements that could lower the cost of your insurance premium. If you've added any safety features to your car or home, talk to your representative. Adding an alarm system or making your home less susceptible to roof leaks or fire damage may reduce the overall premium cost. Don't take what you're shown on a policy at face value until after you've spoken with your representative about all money saving options. Remember that insurance companies want the most they can get, so you'll have to conduct a little research to find out where you can be saving and bring it up to your insurance agent.
