Cutting Costs: General Info on Saving

Whether you're just starting out or getting ready to retire, everyone can benefit from general savings tips and learning how to cut costs. Taking even small steps to start saving money can help you build a nest egg or start paying off debts. You may not realize how much money you actually waste every year on fees that many of us just accept as normal fees that we have to pay. You may also be losing money in your home on your energy bill and grocery bill. By enacting just a few money saving tips, you can begin cutting costs and build up a savings.

Avoid Fees and Bank Charges

One area we lose a lot of money is on check cashing fees and ATM fees. You shouldn't have to pay to access your own money. Look for a bank that doesn't charge for a checking account. You should also look for a bank that has more than one branch so that you can use your ATM card at a variety of locations without having to pay fees. Research your bank's policies to see what the charges are for certain infractions, such as overdrawing on your account. Some banks charge as little as $20 to cover funds, while others will charge you upwards of $50. You may end up paying more in overdraft charges than your original charge.

Take Advantage of Rewards Cards

When companies first offered consumers rewards cards, many people were wary. They seemed like a credit card and most people didn't want to be bothered with yet another card in their wallet. But rewards cards have grown and a ton of businesses now offer some form of rewards system for their customers. You can save money on products, receive special discounts via email or regular mail, get coupons for your favorite products, or earn points towards gift rewards. If you own a store credit card, see if the card offers a rewards program. Many retail stores now allow you to automatically enroll in their rewards program through your credit card. Every time you use the card you earn rewards points for coupons or gift rewards.

Learn How to Coupon

Couponing can save you hundreds of dollars a year. Manufacturers offer coupons for grocery items, fast food restaurants, and service companies. Some stores will double coupons, and you can use a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon together to save even more money. People who plan their shopping based only on the coupons they have available may save more than half on their bill.

Start Buying Used

The stigma of used products has disappeared as more people are actually looking for what they call vintage items. You can purchase clothing, books, furniture, cars, toys, and much more used. If you compare what you'd spend on the product new, you can save hundreds by learning how to find quality used items. Once you start using thrifty practices and looking for ways to save money, you'll find that you have a little more each month to save or spend on something fun.
